Community Action Initiative Research

Forward House (lead agency), along with the SOS, RDN, and Island Crisis Care Society (primary partners) and more than 22 other businesses, agencies, and government reps (secondary partners) successfully applied for a Community Action Initiative (CAI) convening grant.

Our goal is to identify and address barriers facing individuals ages 55 and above, who constitute approximately 55% of our total population in District 69. We are specifically targeting those experiencing chronic illness or mental health/addiction issues.

Our primary research questions include:

1. Why are some older adults (55+) with chronic health or mental health/addiction issues not accessing the existing services in District 69?

2. We understand that transportation issues can be a major barrier to accessing services. How could businesses/agencies collaborate to help with transportation to and from programs?

3. What programs for persons with chronic illness or mental health issues would you like to see offered that are not currently available in District 69?

Upon completion of the research, we will be producing a final report with recommendations, due mid-April. We will use these recommendations as the basis for our application for a CAI Service Innovation Grant, due May 31st. Sixteen out of the twenty-three agencies funded for the convening grants will be awarded up to $100,000 to implement their recommendations over an 18-month period, starting September 2016.

Our research will be conducted as follows:
